ABOUT US

Training the Family Dog was established in 2014. It was created to support families and their pet dogs with modern, effective and ethical, training solutions.

I am a mother of two beautiful children, a wife and a businesswoman. Samantha, my eldest child lives with special needs. Our household is blessed to have a Labrador named Eric, an assistance dog that supports Samantha and is her very best friend.

My younger years were focused on horses with a trusty dog by my side. In 2009, I began working professionally with dogs. I studied and achieved my certificate lll in Dog Behaviour and Training in 2012. To this day, I am actively engaging in conferences and events for ongoing support and up to date knowledge.

As a pet dog trainer, I see many families who don’t foresee the challenges of adding a puppy to their home. Families adjust better when they know how to manage their puppies and appropriately involve the household in Training the Family Dog. The bond between the family and the dog can suffer if unsuitable methods are used. I believe I provide a realistic way for busy families to include and train their dog(s). Teaching families how to communicate effectively and ethically with their dog will establish a happy environment for all.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When can my puppy join a class?

Puppies can attend after their very first vaccination, puppy class is specifically designed for puppies aged between 8-15 weeks at the start of the course.

How do I enroll my puppy?

Spaces in class are limited to 5 or 6 puppies, to enroll your puppy please contact Therese by phone 0405321677 or email through the contact page. You will then be emailed details and paperwork for the class.

How do I pay?

You can pay Cash at the first class or by Bank Transfer. This information is on the enrollment email.

Can children attend?

Family participation is encouraged as it is important that everyone learns how to act around the puppy. From my experience most young children get distracted at class and then distract their parents, if possible, come without young children. Please feel free to phone me to discuss.

What happens if I miss a class?

Unfortunately no catchup sessions can be guaranteed, however if possible, you may be able to do a 15 minute key points session immediately prior to or after your next class.

What training system is used?

Training the Family Dog uses Reward Based Training; this means rewarding your dog for behaviours you wish to see repeated. The reward can be a favorite game, toy or food.

Do I have to use food to train my dog?

MOSTLY YES, food is used to TEACH your dog. Food is often one of the most powerful motivators for your dog. Once your dog knows a behaviour we move to rewards, which is what the dog wants at that moment.
